Distilled not long after Lagavulin’s true distillery character was refined and perfected, this whisky comes from a handful of refill American oak hogshead casks filled in 1991. This 28-year-old is the first to highlight the pure golden Lagavulin spirit, thanks to carefully managed cask influence, and has a terrific depth of flavour.

"This is an exceptional deep gold Lagavulin. Not long before it was distilled, we had made great strides towards capturing the pure distillery character of this majestic malt and this is the oldest release ever to mark that achievement, drawn from a mere handful of remaining casks of their kind filled in 1991. Preserving that defining spirit down the years required the minimal cask influence of extra-mature wood. So we carefully selected for this release very old casks; American Oak hogsheads that had previously cocooned whiskies for generations unknown, even before they were re-filled in 1991 to begin this long maturation journey.
Twenty-eight years on a golden spirit is revealed, with real depth, startling clarity and glorious complexity. Classic Lagavulin aromas of linseed oil and fresh linen jump from the glass, with a distant wisp of bergamot- scented smoke. The texture is smoothly oily and rich while the beautifully balanced taste, in which a spicy warmth builds, is sweet, then salty and smoky. Smoky to finish, and with an intense urgency, it shows us just why we are right to expect so much from Lagavulin today."
